As I mentioned in my last post, I don’t have much time for extra activities. This includes TV. (Exhausted at the end of a long day of teaching and parenting, I usually just go to sleep rather than watch something.)
But we recently had a tropical storm pass over Nicaragua which has given us a lot of rainy days–a fine excuse to stay indoors and watch something as a family. My kids suggested the show “Floor is Lava” on Netflix.
I’m usually not one for game shows. Especially after my job working for a TV production company where I was responsible for watching gameshows and logging the highlights. Boxes and boxes of video cassette tapes. 8 hours a day. My brain turned to mush, and Bob Barker haunted my dreams. But we digress…
Trial by Fire
“Floor is Lava,” however, looked promising. It’s based on every kid’s fantasy: to cross a room where the floor is lava, where you have to jump from couches to tables to chairs, being careful not to fall in.
The show makes that fantasy a reality. OK, not 100% reality. The floor, of course, really isn’t lava. It’s a giant pool filled with orange water that bubbles and erupts. Pretty close without being deadly.
Contestants have to cross the room jumping or swinging from one safe spot to another. And if they fall in, they’re out. It’s great fun to watch. My wife, kids, and I find ourselves cheering the contestants on and shouting, “Noooooo!” when they fall in.
This probably won’t turn me into a regular game show watcher. But I’ll be sure to check out more episodes. So, if you get the chance, I highly recommend you check out “Floor is Lava.”
